12 June 2001, UK

Dear Dr. Ecommerce:

I would like some advice and examples of internet site disclaimers. I am operating in the UK.

Thanks

Hans

Dear Hans:

Without knowing the nature of your web site, I can't give specific advice about your disclaimer. Indeed, you would do best to discuss this issue with a legal professional familiar with the Internet.

However, a little common sense should get you started. The main reason for having a disclaimer is liability. On my site I have a small disclaimer to ensure that no one misunderstands my advice, does something crazy and then tries to sue me for it.

What you need to do is review your web site and consider all the potential issues of liability or misunderstanding that might arise.

You can find sample disclaimers for UK companies by entering the terms "disclaimer" and "UK" in the Google search engine - which you can now access from my home page (but be sure you tick "search WWW") - and you will get links to a lot of disclaimers. Enter just the term "disclaimer" and you will get even more - although they will be from all around the world.

Good luck,

Dr. Ecommerce
