4 Jun 2001, UK Hi Dr. Ecommerce: What do you think will be the electronic government effect on the relation between the public sector and the private sector? Thanks a lot, Hisham Dear Hisham: Electronic government will have two affects on public-private sector
1. It will reduce costs, especially for government, but also for the private sector. By putting forms, invitations to tender and information on-line, governments can substantially improve the efficiency of their operations. This should allow civil servants to focus more on serving their people and less on doing admin. The private sector will also be able to reduce costs as filling forms on-line and submitting them is generally more cost efficient than filling out paper forms and posting them. 2. Normally, e-government is more transparent, leaves a trail of evidence and requires applications, bids and fee payments to be done properly. This makes it hard for government officials to be corrupt. That is not to say that all government officials are corrupt - but corruption is a problem in many places, particularly in poor economies, and if e-government can help reduce that corruption, everyone benefits (except, of course, the corrupt officials). But I suggest you put your question to the eThesis discussion forum as well. eThesis is a forum for students writing theses or otherwise studying e-commerce. Students and others share links, exchange ideas and help each other far more than I could in a single e-mail. To join, send a blank e-mail to eThesis-subscribe@topica.com or check out the e-thesis pages for more information first. Good luck, Dr. Ecommerce |
