25 May 2001, USA What does an old Chinese proverb "More people build walls than Thank you for your time, Ray
Dear Ray: This is a thought provoking question - so I put it to the thought-provoking eThesis community of students researching e-commerce. Two of the more interesting responses include: "I've got to say the question was very interesting. The Chinese proverb, which I have never heard before - is spite of being Chinese - possibly means that many companies established their website yet neglected to advertise and promote the website. "Wall" indicates basic infrastructure and "bridge" indicates communication in Chinese, generally speaking." - Xing ZHAO "I think the biggest wall in e-commerce is poor navigation. My grocery store can get away with making things hard to find in the hopes I'll impulse buy rather than drive somewhere else to encounter the same situation. If web sites aren't easy, the next one is only a click away. Especially if the web sites were found through a search that turned up a hundred other vendors. Shoe stores in malls have been there. They have competing vendors easily accessible. If we don't build a bridge (preferably with a conveyor belt), to the product we will loose trade." - Jeronimo Bonno I couldn't have said it better myself. Good luck, Dr. Ecommerce
