4 Apr 2001, USA
My name is Tim Hodgkins and Im an exchange student at Central Connecticut State University, from the University of Hertfordshire in the UK. Im studying a BA Joint Honours in MIS and Marketing and Im currently searching for a full time position in E-Commerce for a period of a year available from July. I have contacted you in the hope of help to find out how I might be able to get my foot in the door and gain the practical experience that I am after. Although my personal experience in this environment is limited, I feel that I might increase my chances of success through my willingness to learn coupled with my acknowledgement for hard work and the true enjoyment that I have for the subject. The Visa that I have enables me to live and work in the US for a further year after study. Even though this is a request for advice, maybe you might consider me to work in your company. If you think that I have potential then I would be glad to hear from you. I have enclosed a copy of my resume, which contains my contact information. Sincerely yours,
I have bad news for you and bad news for you. But don't give up hope! Firstly, I'm based in Brussels, not the USA. So even if I needed someone, it wouldn't be in the right location. Secondly, as you are no doubt aware, there's been an economic slow-down in the States - and technology companies have been hardest hit. So, you will find it harder to get work now than you did a year ago. If you have clear technical skills (programming, networks, etc), you'll have no problems. Otherwise, you may have to be a bit creative in your approach. Since you are British, you might look for companies keen to expand into Britain. You would be able to offer cultural insight and, possibly, connections. Alternatively, if you are not desperate for a steady income and like selling, you could offer yourself as a commission-based sales representative for an e-business. Finally, if you check out the Yahoo page on Jobs, you'll find more job links than you could investigate in a month. Good luck, Dr. Ecommerce Employers: If you represent a company that would be interested in hiring Tim, or if you have a tip, you can e-mail him at timhodgkins@hotmail.com
