26 Dec 2000, Nigeria

Dr. Ecommerce,

I was very thrilled that my search paid off when I found your site. and it is a really cool site.

I am a law student in my final year at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. I am currently writing my long essay on a critical appraisal of the laws regulating commercial activities across the internet" . I will be very delighted if you could email me with sites that can be relevant to my essay. I would also like to know how binding these laws made by the EEC are to the rest of the world, remembering that the internet issue (and indeed ecommerce) is a global issue which needs a more ubiquitous body like the UN to give it more teeth and bite. Thanks for the anticipated assistance looking for to your mail.

Yours truly,

Akinsoto

Dear Akinsoto:

Thank you for your kind words. I put your question to legal eagle Corinna Schulze, who replies:

"The regulations adopted by the European Union (which means by the Council and the Parliament) are only binding for Member States but not outside the European Union.

There are other European Oganisations (like the Council of Europe) which are not a part of the EU and which can have an international character. Regulations adopted by these Organisations are only binding to states which are associated to it."

In fact, there are a number of global organisations, such as the World Trade Organisation (www.wto.org), the World Intellectual Property Organisaton (www.wipo.org) and others which write treaties on issues related to e-commerce.

As for useful resources, I suggest you join eThesis, the discussion forum for students preparing theses or otherwise researching e-commerce. For more information, look at www.drecommerce.com/discussion.html#ethesis.

Good luck,

Dr. Ecommerce
