5 Dec 2000, UK

Dear Sir/Madam,

I would like to collect information on the economic aspects of EU falling behind USA in the field of E-commerce.

Thank you

Mike

Dear Mike:

Frankly, I don't think Europe is behind the US in terms of e-commerce. After all, e-commerce covers a lot of ground and there are clearly areas where the US leads, but also areas where Europe leads, not to mention areas where Japan leads.

The US has clearly taken the lead in PC based e-commerce and commercialising the world wide web. And, of course, some people think this is e-commerce.

However, e-commerce is much wider and there are areas where Europe has taken a clear lead. Electronic banking, smart cards, international e-trading and multi-lingual e-commerce solutions come to mind.

Japan, meanwhile, has taken a lead in m-commerce; that is mobile e-commerce.

For statistics, I find the following sites useful:

Good luck,
