23 Oct2000, Italy

Dear Dr. E-commerce,

I'm Italian and, as you probably know, it's very difficult for us to be informed about the legal aspects of the Internet and e-commerce. In particular I would like to know where can I find any site containing Italian laws about e-commerce. I ask this question because just yesterday I saw on TV a story about a shop owner who had to pay L. 10.000.000 just because he did not inform the city that he had started doing business by e-commerce, too. I know that "ignorance is no excuse in the eyes of the law", but nobody ever informs us about anything....

Can you?

Thank you in advance.

Please accept my best regards.

Lela

Dear Lela:

To the best of my knowledge, there is not an Italian site that includes all the e-commerce laws. However, I suggest you check the following:

Forum per la societa' dell'Informazione
http://www.palazzochigi.it/fsi/

Internet and SME (a good starting point)
http://www.e-commercepmi.it/e-commerce/welcome.asp

Privacy laws
http://www.comunicazioni.it/normativa/index.htm

It would probably also be a good idea to check with your local chamber of commerce before starting any new business. They should be able to tell you about local regulations.

All the best,

Dr. Ecommerce
