Dr. Ecommerce,

Could you please inform me about the Standards that relates to e-commerce.

  1. Are there any standards already formed?
  2. Those standards are both non-technical and/or technical?
  3. Where can I find those standards?
  4. How those standards are established, e.g. by legislation or by national standards organisations?

Thanks in advance

CB

Dear CB:

You’re welcome in advance. Firstly, it is important to keep in mind that e-commerce is a very wide topic. Hence, there are a lot of standards. Indeed, for one computer to communicate to another computer, there is a need for a standard of communication (called a protocol - as in "hypertext transfer protocol" or "http"). Likewise, for an electronic transaction to result in money in your bank account (if you are the vendor), standards are necessary.

For lots of information about standards and bodies that maintain standards, I suggest you look at our very own "Standardisation" page at http://www.ispo.cec.be/ecommerce/issues/standardization.html
