Dr. Ecommerce:

Can you tell me which country in the European Union offers the best conditions for setting up an electronic commerce enterprise?

Wolfgang

Dear Wolfgang:

This is not for me to say and there are a great many factors to consider including tax, rent, ease of establishing a new business, commerce laws, your products, availability of staff and much more, not to mention the type of electronic commerce you wish to do. Business relationships and connections are also an important issue. For most people, of course, setting up in their own country is best - it is generally easier to establish a venture and base your business in a place you know.

Moreover, as the European Union develops a legal framework for doing electronic commerce, the legal differences from country to country become smaller and smaller. Yet another reason for sticking to where you are.

Of course, if you don't want to set up in your own country, for whatever reason, I highly recommend you visit interesting countries, talk to business owners there and see if the style of life there suits you.

Finally, one of our projects, "Knowledge and Information Transfer on Electronic Commerce" (KITE) is collecting examples of best practice in electronic commerce. Take a look at their web site at http://www.kite.tsa.de/.
